Developed by the Tire Industry Association (TIA), the RIST procedure is a four-step process for installing wheel and rims on commercial vehicles. This procedure is designed to help technicians ensure proper wheel installation and prevent potentially dangerous situations, such as wheel-offs.
R.I.S.T.
Remove Debris
This step involves cleaning the mating surfaces of the wheel hub, rim, and brake rotor, as well as the lug stud or bolt threads, to ensure a clean and secure fit.
Inspect Components
Damaged or worn parts like the wheel, studs, nuts, or hub should be replaced before installation.
Snug Fasteners
Lug nuts should be tightened in a star pattern to properly seat the wheel on the hub.
Torque to Specification
Using a torque wrench, tighten lug nuts to the manufacturer’s specified torque value to ensure proper clamping force.
