Landing Gear

Trailer landing gear refers to retractable legs that support the front of a semi-trailer when it is not coupled to a tractor. These supports are located at the front of the trailer and play a crucial role in maintaining stability and safety.

Function

The primary job of landing gear on a semi-trailer is to support the weight of the trailer when it’s not connected to the tractor. It ensures that the trailer remains level and secure during loading, unloading, and storage.

Components

Trailer landing gear consists of two legs (sometimes referred to as “stabilizers”) that extend downward from the front of the trailer. These legs are designed to handle the heavy weight of the trailer.

Mechanism

The landing gear legs are equipped with a gear mechanism that allows them to be raised or lowered. One leg (called the driving leg) has an internal gearbox and a crank, while the other leg (the driven leg) works in tandem. A central transmission rod (known as a cross shaft) connects the two legs.

Operation

To adjust the landing gear, the driver simply rotates the crank clockwise or counterclockwise. This action raises or lowers both legs simultaneously. When lifting the loaded trailer, it’s essential to engage the low gear for optimal stability.

Variety of Models

Manufacturers offer various landing gear models, including those designed for light-duty and heavy-duty applications. Some have gearboxes, while others don’t. The choice depends on specific needs and load requirements.
