Axle
An axle is a structural component to which wheels, brakes and suspension are attached. A semi-trailer axle connects the wheels to the chassis of the semi-trailer. It supports the weight of the trailer and its cargo, and facilitates smooth movement on the road.
Functional and well-maintained axles are important for safety, cargo protection, and equipment life.
Types of Semi-Trailer Axles
There are several types of semi-trailer axles, each designed for specific purposes and load requirements.
- Tandem Axles: These consist of two sets of axles placed close together, providing better weight distribution and stability.
- Spread Axles: These are single axles spaced further apart, offering improved load distribution and reduced tire wear.
- Leaf Spring Axles: These use flexible steel strips (leaf springs) to absorb shocks and provide a smoother ride.
- Torsion Axles: These have rubber cords inside a tube, offering independent suspension for each wheel.
- Lift Axles: These are non-powered axles that can be raised or lowered to adjust the load distribution.
- Triple Axles: These configurations have three axles, typically used for heavier loads.
- Quad Axles: These configurations have four axles, providing even greater load capacity.
- Flip Axles: These are complete axle assemblies that can be flipped up when not in use.
- Pin-On Axles: These are attached to the rear of the trailer and can be removed when not needed.
- Stinger Axles: These are extendable axles that can be adjusted based on the load requirements.
