A-Train
A-Train is a tractor-trailer configuration in which a tractor pulls two trailers, which are connected by a converter dolly. The converter dolly is coupled to a pintle hook on the rear of the forward trailer. The rear trailer is coupled to the 5th wheel on the converter dolly. The dolly has one or two axles and is licensed as a separate trailer.
Single axle A-trains are used extensively by the LTL industry, while double axle A-trains are used more often for Long Combination Vehicles, to put two 48’ or 53’ trailers together. A-trains are mostly used for pulling dry van trailers.
