TMC SuperTech: Commentary from Ted Coltrain, VP of Cox Automotive Mobility Fleet Services
Organized by TMC’s Technician & Educator Committee (TEC), the National Technician Skills Competitions gives Technicians a chance demonstrate their diagnostic abilities through a series of skills stations. In the following interview, Ted Coltrain, VP of Cox Automotive Mobility Fleet Services, weighs in on the company’s Technicians and their impressive performance at this year’s TMC SuperTech competition.
Cox Automotive Mobility Fleet Services’ motto is to defy downtime. Tell us more about what that means and how you defy downtime for clients.
Absolutely. At Cox Automotive Mobility Fleet Services, we are driven to ‘Defy Downtime’ for our clients. Downtime is of top concern for fleets operators as it can have a rippling effect across the business. Failing to address inefficiencies limits operations and keeps vehicles off the road, hurting profitability. We pride ourselves on being the premier fleet maintenance provider for light, medium and heavy-duty trucks and trailers, servicing fleets nationwide. But, we can’t do it without our team of world-class technicians. I truly believe we have the best-of-the best technicians working for us. They are not only some of the most highly-skilled techs in the industry, but go above and beyond to deliver best-in-class service for our clients.
Tell us more about your elite team of technicians and the recent Top Tech competition your company hosted.
At Cox Automotive Mobility Fleet Services, we have 1,000+ technicians, the majority of whom are mobile. Of this elite group, the top 3% compete in our company’s annual Top Tech competition. These 30 finalists who compete are the most elite of the elite. Of that group, three are named champion each year in the Heavy Duty, Light-Medium Duty and Trailer categories. It’s incredible to see them compete – top of their game and true masters of their craft – and celebrate their success.
Can you tell us more about TMCSuperTech and what took place during that event?
TMC did a fantastic job hosting the annual SuperTech competition. It was thrilling to see technicians from across the nation representing a variety of companies. They, too, are the most elite of the elite and top of their game. This two-day event featured a written challenge and several hands-on skills challenges. Our Top Tech champions and a few top finishers competed at TMCSuperTech. The outcome? Michael Kerfoot, Sr. Mobile Diesel Tech came in as 2nd place finisher in trailer and Josh Lawhorn, Sr. Mobile Diesel Technician came in as a 9th place finisher in light-medium duty. We are extremely proud of all our world-class technicians and applaud the hard work they do every day, and it’s nice when they can be recognized within our industry at events like this one too.
